Tree Preference and Temporal Activity Patterns for a Native Ant Community in an Urbanized California Woodland

چکیده
Abstract Anthropogenic disturbances, including land use change and exotic species, can alter the diversity dynamics of ant communities. To examine foraging behavior in an urbanized habitat northern California, we surveyed presence 9 species on 876 trees across 4 seasons during both day night a 9.5-hectare oak-exotic woodland. Ants were more likely to be observed native, evergreen trees, suggesting that native may help maintain diversity. Species showed clear patterns temporal partitioning activity. Ant varied their Quercus agrifolia season day/night axes. Of 3 most frequently observed, Camponotus semitestaceus was active spring summer nights, Formica moki days, Prenolepis imparis fall winter. Liometopum occidentale second night, winter day. Our findings demonstrate urban woodland Northern California able community, strong within community.

Hotspots of Community Change: Temporal Dynamics Are Spatially Variable in Understory Plant Composition of a California Oak Woodland
Community response to external drivers such climate and disturbance can lead to fluctuations in community composition, or to directional change. Temporal dynamics can be influenced by a combination of drivers operating at multiple spatial scales, including external landscape scale drivers, local abiotic conditions, and local species pools. We hypothesized that spatial variation in these factors...
متن کاملCovariance Patterns Among Birds and Vegetation in a California Oak Woodland
We sampled characteristics of vegetation and estimated abundances of bird species on 23 plots representing a continuum of tree densities of the blue oak phase of the Coast Range foothill woodland near Hopland, California. Fifty-one bird species were found breeding. Cavity-nesters dominated the bird community in number of species and individuals. Cavitynesters used a variety of tree species for ...
